Charles Mishalany is a multi-string bassist and bass instructor located in the “burbs” of Marietta, GA just outside of Atlanta. A recent arrival to Atlanta, Charles has lived most of his life in Southern California where he performed with a wide variety of artists and maintained three teaching studios since 1997, also serving as the principal bass instructor at the Orange County Music Academy.
Now in Atlanta, Charles enjoys teaching both the bass guitar and the upright acoustic from both his home and nearby music studios, allowing a welcome change from his long California commutes.
Charles also plays in several Atlanta based R&B and fusion groups including The Diane MacIntosh Band, Waterlines and his soon-to-be named, original music collaboration with local Atlanta Institute of Music instructors. He also continues his decade long performance and association with praise and worship teams in the area of Contemporary Christian music. He is currently serving as bassist for The First Presbyterian Church.

Charles also has an endorsement relationship with La Bella strings. He encourages everyone to try the Hard Rockin’ Steels for a super focused and clear, low B string.
Over the years, Charles has played a wide variety of music from Big Band Jazz to Ska. He has opened for such notable bands as Sugar Ray, Sublime, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Hepcat, The Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Skatalites and many more. He has also had the privilege to perform with notable musicians including members of Oingo Boingo, Isaac Hayes, Louis Bellson, Chris Williams and many more.
Included in his CV is work for television, musical theater, national gospel tours, cruise ships, and countless club, festival, casino, and corporate gigs playing everything from Top40 pop, R&B, rock…..jazz and Latin.
As a “working” musician, Charles can be found playing anywhere from the Brea Jazz Festival to your sister’s wedding. These varied musical environments place different demands on the musician and necessitate the use of versatile instruments with a wide sound palette.
In search of a well-balanced fretless bass that could handle such demands, Charles set out in 2004 to find the ultimate fretless. A fretless that could, with a turn of a knob, have a burpy and abrasive, rear pickup, Jaco tone but quickly go to a lush, sweet timbred voice. Such a bass would also have to be custom made and yet be affordable to a working musician.
Enter the NAMM 2005 show in Anaheim, CA. After trying a myriad of disappointing, mid-priced and expensive, fretless basses, Charles stumbled upon Fred Bolton’s Bee Bass booth. Blown away by the versatile, almost cello-like, singing voice of Fred’s fretless Bee Bass, Charles soon committed to an order for a Queen 5.
After the arrival of the Queen Bee 5, Charles’ search had ended. The bass surpassed its expectations in beauty and tone. The low B string is the most focused and resonant B string of any bass played while the gorgeous wood and shape continues to draw compliments from musicians and audience members alike.
